Crockpot 5 Spice Chicken

Crockpot 5 Spice Chicken

We’ve been wanting to make 5 Spice Chicken for a long time now. We had a recipe – not necessarily for 5 spice chicken – that we wanted to make a long time ago, so we bought some 5 spice mix. Then we could find or figure out what recipe we had bought it for. Well, I have been wanting to use the spice for quite awhile. Finally, I saw some 5 Spice Chicken on Pinterest and finally decided it was time to try this spice out that we bought.

At first, I thought the mixture would be spicy. I mean it is in the name! I was very happily surprised that it was not a hot spicy. It was just flavorful – very flavorful! I really liked it. Full of flavor but not hot – which my kids do not like.

Plus, my house smelled good all day while it was cooking! YUM! We served it up over rice. My 5-year-old – who hates EVERYTHING (except pancakes, french toast, and ravioli) actually gave this an “it’s okay” nod! That is HUGE since he never likes anything! This will be on the menu again soon!

Ingredients:

  • 1-3lbs chicken – I used cubed chicken breast, but you could use bone-in breast, thighs, or legs!
  • 2 inch of fresh grated ginger or 1 tsp ginger powder
  • 1/3 cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup chicken stock/broth (if only making 1lb of chicken, you can skip this)
  • 3 cloves of minced garlic
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped or used dried minced onion
  • 1 Tbsp 5 spice powder

Directions:

Place all the ingredients in the crockpot. We simply sprinkled the 5 spice on the chicken, so it would be on there more directly. Cook on high 3-4 hours or low 5-6. Done! Serve over rice.
