Monocacy

On the way to Harper’s Ferry, we stopped by Monocacy – “The Battle that saved Washington.” This battlefield is not far from DC, near Fredrick, Md.

It is a nice little battlefield to visit. I didn’t know much about it before visiting and working on the junior ranger booklets. Compared to places like Gettysburg, it is little! The visitor’s center has a fun museum upstairs. There are only a few monuments here, but it is a nice little stop. The gift shop had tons of clearance, so the kids were happy to pick up hats, shirts, pins, etc.

I wouldn’t plan on spending much time here, as there isn’t a whole lot to see. It is still fun to see at least once though!

You can also get a junior ranger badge here! They have 3 different levels that you can earn. You can earn a Badge, a patch, and a pin. My kids completed their entire books, so they earned all of the goodies! Plus they got stickers and a free bracelet! Not a bad haul for a small NPS site!
