This is a fun craft that I did with my daughter, who just turned 12 and went into Young Womens. It is cute and really easy to do!
We made both a necklace and a magnet for the refrigerator. You’ll need mostly the same supplies for both projects.
Needed:
- Mini Glass Bottles with Cork Stopper – I got 24 to use on several projects and crafts
- E6000 Clear – or other permanent glue product
- Sugar or Sand
- Food Coloring
- Stamping Blanks (optional)
- Letter Steel Stamp Die (optional)
- Eye Pin screws
- Magnets – for making them magnet option
- Jump Ring – if making necklace or adding a stamping blank
- Necklace – any kind will work
- Ziploc bags – used to make mixing the sugar and food coloring easier
- Funnel
To make the bottles:
Place some sugar or sand into a ziploc bag. I used sugar because it is cheap and I had it in the house! Then add in drops of food coloring to get the desired color. Move the sugar around in the bag until you get your desired color. I did not measure and just mixed until I got the color I wanted. For Gold, I did several drops of yellow, to get a deep yellow color. For yellow, I just did one or two drops, to get a light yellow color, so you could tell the difference between the two.
Use the funnel to add in the colored sugar into the glass jars in layers. You can do it in any order that you desire. Once you have all your layers, use a little of the E6000 glue around the opening of the bottle and firmly place the cork stopper.
Whether you are making a magnet or necklace, you may add a stamping blank to the bottle. Use the eye screw and screw it into the cork. Before screwing it in, I used a drop of the E6000 glue, and screwed the eye screw into the cork where I put the glue. This way, I was certain the eye screw was firmly in the cork. You may then add a jump ring through the eye screw, and add your stamping blank.
Your stamping blank may say whatever you choose. You could choose a scripture reference, an initial, or your name. I was going to do my daughter’s name, but I she just wanted the initial. I went with what she wanted 🙂
To make the necklace, you follow the same steps in adding the stamping blank, just use the jump ring to thread the bottle onto the necklace.
If making it into a magnet, I used 2 of those tiny magnets. I attached them using a little E6000 glue. I put one near the top of the bottle and one near the bottom.
Easy to do and it turned out super cute! Great for a gift or to make on activity nights!
