Fort Missoula

After Yellowstone, we were headed to Glacier National Park. To break up the drive, I searched for things to do and explore. I found Fort Missoula and knew it would be a great stop for us!

First, the grounds are FREE! My favorite price. Then the museum had a VERY affordable family admission, so I thought it would be an inexpensive place to check out.

There is so much to see on the grounds, that by the time we had explored it all, the kids didn’t have much interest in going to the museum. Since we were just using it as a pit stop, we didn’t push them, but I’m sure it would have been a great way to spend another hour! (They were ready to get back on the road and to the next hotel. Always wanting to get to the hotel – sigh)

The grounds are on 32 acres and have over 20 historic structures. It is all self-guided. Officer’s Quarters, School Room, Train Station, a train, lookout tower (you can CLIMB up in it!!), cabins, a church, barn, Detention Center Barracks (this was facinating and such a sad part of American History), Tipi Burner, and outhouse are just some of the buildings you can see.

We honestly had a great time here. This is probably one of the best pit stops we have ever had on one of our trips! Best of all, it was FREE and educational! Plus the kids LOVED it and could run around outside! If you are ever in Missoula Montana, be sure to stop by!
