I saw this pin on Pinterest
“Caramelize your Onions quicker by adding Baking Soda”
Well,
if you follow along,
you know that I LOVE caramelized onions!
They take forever,
but well worth the wait!
So I thought
Might as well try it, right?
Maybe it will save me a few minutes?
EPIC FAILURE!
My new moto:
Do NOT add baking soda to onions!
You cannot speed up the beauty that is
delicious, caramelized onions.
I added the baking soda to the onions
That’s it
I noticed they immediately started to turn yellow
And watery
(I did not add salt)
then the onions seemed to turn into a mushy, onion mess
That is NOT how my caramelized onions usually turn out!
They were perfectly sliced before I put them in there
I have never had them turn into a yellow mush
I let them keep cooking
and eventually they browned up
into a brown mush
Grrr..
Not only did it not work
but it wasted like $2 worth of sweet onions
(that is 3 LARGE onions)
and made a HUGE mess of my pan
The onions had a weird taste to them
They were edible
buy not my usual, delicious caramelized onions
It was rather disappointing
It would have been nice to have a shortcut
to caramelized onion deliciousness.
But it is not to be 🙁
I’ll have to add this to my Pinterest FAIL board
’cause at least for me
it did not work
My new moto:
Do NOT add baking soda to onions!
I am sure there is a science or something
that says it will work.
Maybe it was the onions I used?
I did what the post said
I won’t be trying it again…
Anyone else had luck with this trick?
I guess I will just be caramelizing the old, LONG way
and saying:
Do NOT add baking soda to onions!
If you look at the pictures in this post
The onions with the baking soda look like mine
and that is just not what I am looking for
in eating and enjoying my caramelized onions
