The Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park was closed the majority of the time we were on the Big Island. They were working on the road/entrance or something like that. Luckily, it is only 3 miles from the airport, so we stopped in before our flight out. However, thanks to traffic, we only had about 15 minutes. Not a whole lot of time. Bummer. They also have a Junior Ranger program, but again, VERY limited time, so we’ll have to mail that in too.
The visitor’s center is very small. We were told to get to most of the places, you have to hike a bit and there is no water along the way. Sigh. We didn’t have time for that. So we just saw the lava fields right near the visitor’s center. Perhaps on another visit when they are not closed on our entire visit. Oh well. It was fun to see the Lava fields (Had we known we were going to get stuck at the airport due to computer outage, we could have stayed longer!)
