The Hamakua Macadamia Nut Factory was also close to our resort and just up the road from Pu’ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site. We were going to go to the Mauna Loa Factory while in Hilo, but they aren’t open on weekends (when we were there). Seems odd to have something touristy and not be open on weekends – odd.
Anyway, the Hamakua Macadamia Nut factory was a fun stop. The kids could see how they process the Macadamia Nuts and got to play with a nutcracker. I think kid #4 thought the Nutcracker was the best thing ever.
The BEST part: TONS and TONS of samples. We tried all the different flavors and they even had popcorn and brittle samples too. We LOVED it. Of course, then we became addicted to a few of the flavors and had to but several bags, since we couldn’t stay there all day and keep shoving the samples in our mouths. Sooooo good!
So if you’re on that side of the Island, stop in for some delicious samples (and be ready to open your wallet after tasting the deliciousness!)
