Sour Cream Old Fashioned Donuts

I want to cry. This post was published and then somehow disappeared when I tried to fix a picture… So now I am writing it up all again. Sigh.

My husband’s favorite donuts are Old Fashioned. Over the years, they have become my favorite too. I have made raised donuts before (I made some REALLY good ones I need to blog too!), but never tried Old Fashioned. They seemed like they would be hard to make, so I never considered making them.

Well, for Father’s Day this morning, I decided to try making them. I was so surprised how EASY they were to make.

I made the dough last night in like 5 minutes. This morning, I took the dough out of the fridge, rolled it out, and fried them in like 5-10 minutes. Waiting for them to cool took longer. That was agony waiting to shove them in my mouth! ha!

The first ones, I rolled out too thin, so they were smaller donuts/ The second roll-out was the right thickness and they turned out PERFECTLY!

The donuts holes may have been the best part! Sooooo good!

Watch the temperature of the oil – my thermometer moved and the oil got a bit too hot towards the end.

I meant to try putting one or two in the air fryer and totally forgot! Guess I need to make them again SOON! (just try it out!)

Since they were so easy to make and no waiting around for the dough to rise, I’ll be making them often!

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cup cake flour (you can use all-purpose flour if that is what you have)
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • canola oil for frying

Glaze

  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp corn syrup (eyeball it)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup hot water

Directions:

With a mixer, beat together the butter and sugar to a sandy consistency. Add in the egg yolks and mix until light and thick. Add in the baking powder, salt, nutmeg and half the flour. Mix and add in the sour cream. Then add in the other half of the flour. The dough will be sticky. Cover with plastic wrap and chill an hour or overnight.

On a floured surface, roll out the dough to 1/2 inch thick. Use a donut cutter. a cup, or different size biscuit cutters, to cut out your donuts.

Heat a heavy pot with 2 inches of oil in it to 325 degrees. Add in your donuts, a few at a time, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 2 minutes each side (for a lighter donut, 1.5 minutes. As you can see from the pictures, I made some lighter, and some darker)

Place on a cooling rack or paper towel to allow excess oil to drain.

Mix all of the glaze ingredients together in a bowl until smooth. Dip each donut into the glaze and place back onto the cooling rack (I had mine over a baking sheet to catch all the extra glaze and oil). Let sit 10-20 minutes to allow the glaze to set – if you can wait that long!
