This summer, I am wanting to go on a family hike at least once a week. We go for walks every morning and often after dinner as well, but I wanted to try and get some hikes done too! We go on all the walks every summer not only for exercise but to get the kids used to walking because every vacation we take seems to involve LOTS of walking!
I made sandwiches for dinner. For these hiking evenings, we will be having our “big meal” at lunchtime and then just “lunch” type items for dinner that we can take with us. This way, we can leave early in the evening (or late afternoon) You can see #4 carrying the other half of his sandwich in many pictures.
Our first hike for the summer was to McDowell Creek Falls. It has been on my list to do for a while. We decided to do it first because the drive there goes by the gas station, and we needed gas in the car! Ha! Good of a reason as any to choose it first I guess!
It was a bit farther from home that I expected, but it wasn’t too bad. We parked and let the kids choose a snack to take on the hike.
We attempted to get #5 to ride in the new hiking backpack, but he is still not sure about it. We put #4 in it because he is still under the weight limit. It usually works on #5 to have a brother take his stuff, then he wants it. Well, it didn’t work, but #4 LOVED spending half of the hike in the backpack. I’m sure #5 will decide to like the backpack by the time that #6 is big enough to ride in it himself – ha! Sounds about right….
#6 just slept in his wrap the entire time. Yeah – he’s pretty easy right now!
For the first hike of the summer, there wasn’t too much complaining or whining from the kids! YAY! The hike also isn’t very long, so that helps as well!
Note to self: ALWAYS take a picture of the map at the beginning of the trail. I assumed I could just look it up online. Well, there was good cell reception, but we could NOT find a trail map online – doh! Oh well. We ended up driving to the upper falls because we couldn’t figure out which trail to take (There were several forks in the trail with NO signs)
