It’s a snow day! Since the kids are home and I had the time, I decided to finally make raised donuts again! They take awhile to make – mostly passive time raising – but they are oh so good! Melt in your mouth good! YUM!
I was running out of glaze by the time the donut holes were done, so I coated them in powdered sugar. Cinnamon Sugar would also be delicious! You could also make a chocolate or maple glaze/frosting, if you prefer.
We took some warm donuts to neighbors too, because this recipe makes A LOT of donuts. They still went fast around here though!
Ingredients:
- 2 TBSP dry active yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1.5 cups lukewarm milk
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 5 cups flour
- oil for frying
Glaze:
- 1/3 cup butter
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 4 TBSP hot water or as needed
- Also could just use powdered sugar or a cinnamon/sugar blend
Directions:
Place Yeast in warm water and let stand 5 minutes until foamy. Add in the milk, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening, and 2 cups of the flour. Mix with the dough attachment of a stand mixer (or by hand). Slowly, add in the rest of the flour, until the flour no longer sticks to the bowl (you may need a bit more on humid days). Knead for about 5 minutes. Cover and allow to rise until double in size (usually an hour).
Turn dough out onto a
Heat Oil to 350 degrees in a large pot or heavy skillet. Carefully place donuts into oil. Flip once golden brown on one side.
Remove from oil once both sides are golden brown to a cooling rack. You can use a spatula to flip/remove – I use a large wooden skewer. Dip,
I place the donuts on a cooling rack over a jelly roll pan to catch the extra glaze and help with clean up.
For glaze: Melt butter in the saucepan. Add in powdered sugar. Mix in tbsp of water until you get a thin, but not watery consistency. I keep in on the stove top on LOW (like as low as it can go) while I make/fry the donuts.
