Pu’ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site

We managed to get the kids out of the resort for a couple of hours one afternoon (after they’d been swimming with turtles, at the beach, and plenty of trips down the waterslides, they were willing to leave). We went to a Macadamia Nut factory (next Post) and to Pu’ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site – both fairly close to our resort (how we convinced them to leave!)

There is a nice little visitor’s center. We didn’t realize it closed at 4:30, so we made it in and out JUST in time! It doesn’t take long to walk around the small park – I think it took us about 30 minutes, with stops – but there are lots of really cool things to look at along the way! You can take a stroller and is easy for just about anyone to walk around.

Here is the description of the park:

How many places in America can you walk in the footsteps of a king? Where else has a stranded sailor risen up to become a great chief over an entire island? Where else can you experience the culminating event of a people, foretold from centuries past? Where else can you stand on a beach and watch as sharks pass over a submerged temple? Experience all this and much more – only at Pu’ukoholā Heiau!

Well worth the small detour from our resort!

There is a Junior Ranger Program, but we got there so late, we didn’t get the chance to do it. I am thinking we’ll try to mail it in…
